It is the reverse of writing Braille: the same exact, reversible Grade 1 mapping is used, so a text converted to Braille and back comes out identical. It is handy for checking a transcription or reading dots someone sent you.

The decoder reads the Unicode Braille characters (the patterns in the U+2800 block), so it works with dots copied from documents, messages or other tools. As long as the input is real Braille cells rather than a picture of them, you will get clean text back.

When the text looks wrong

If the decoded text comes out as broken or nonsensical words, there are two common reasons:

  • The Braille is contracted (Grade 2). Published books often use contractions, where one cell stands for a whole word or letter group. A Grade 1 decoder reads those cells literally, so the words will not expand. The Grade 2 page explains this.
