How English Braille is read

In Grade 1, every English letter is a single cell, so reading is a direct letter-by-letter process. Two prefixes change how the next cell is read:

  • The capital sign (⠠) means the next letter is uppercase.
  • The number sign (⠼) means the following cells are digits, not letters.

A note on Grade 2

Many real-world English Braille books use Grade 2, where single cells stand for whole words or letter groups (contractions). A Grade 1 decoder reads those cells literally, so contracted text will not expand correctly.
